Advanced Pharmacologic Applications in Primary Care

(45 Pharmacology hours for APNs / 45 contact hours CE Credit)

Purpose

This course is designed to prepare clinical nurse specialists, NPs, NS, and midwives to accurately describe, administer, and counsel patients regarding appropriate and safe medication regimens. Basic pharmacologic principles and the pharmacologic actions of the major drug classes will be discussed in relation to physiologic systems, with emphasis on the application of these agents.

Course Format

This course is a collaborative course between the University of Kentucky and OU College of Nursing. This is a self-directed learning using core PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, Web sites, case-solving activities, and exams. Students must have access to computer facilities, the Internet, a web browser that is equivalent to Internet 5 Explorer or higher, an e-mail address, and a printer.

The course is offered in a hybrid format. Most of the course information is offered online. At the end of the course, students must attend a 1-day workshop to take a proctored final exam, work through selected case studies and learn about prescriptive authority practices for advanced practice nurses in Oklahoma. This course is approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as Category B education.

Objectives

  • Explain the basic principles of pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics.
  • Describe the most commonly prescribed agents in the major drug classes.
  • Explain the mechanism of action of the major drug classes.
  • Analyze the adverse effect and drug interaction profiles of the major drug classes and individual drugs within these classes.
  • Make appropriate therapeutic treatment decisions for individual patients utilizing drugs from the major drug classes.
  • Apply the laws governing the prescribing of drugs when writing prescriptions.

Pre- or Co-requisite

Completion of Advanced Practice Nurse (CNS or NP) graduate program. May or may not have previously taken a

3- credit hour advanced practice nursing pharmacology course as part of the curriculum.

Course Dates

This course is offered open entry. Enroll when you are ready. Workshops will be scheduled based upon student enrollment.

CE Credit

Those successfully completing the course will be awarded 45 contact hours. The University of Oklahoma College of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Colorado Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.The University of Oklahoma has been approved to provide continuing nursing education for three years July 8, 2010 through June 30, 2013. Provider #UOC-0613.

This course has been approved for Pharmacology hours by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing for 45 contact hours of Category B education (based on 50 minutes per contact hour) for Advanced Practice Nurses Advanced practice nurses may be able to submit the hours earned in this course for a portion of their prescriptive authority continuing education for renewal of prescriptive authority recognition, if the course content is relevant to their scope of practice.
