Seminar Objectives
- Describe cultural definitions used in the presentation.
- Demonstrate the use of inductive methodologies to increase cultural awareness.
- Explain at least four tools for increasing cultural awareness.
- Describe 2 models for cultural negotiation.
- List 2 examples of cultural adaptation.
- Discuss 2 evaluation methods to assess cultural awareness.
About the Speaker
Suzan Kardong-Edgren PhD, RN grew up moving frequently around the United States and overseas to Africa, Thailand, and England. She co-taught a Mexico summer immersion elective for four years. Multiple trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to co-teach with local health workers, programs honed her cross cultural communication skills. Her doctoral dissertation topic was on the cultural competency of nursing faculty. She recently completed a multi-site NLN study entitled “what kind of curricula produces the most culturally competent new graduate?” Dr. Edgren has numerous publications on the topic of culture and has made multiple presentations on culture.
