Professional Case Management for Nurses and Social Workers

This course is a two part continuing education certificate course and is structured for 83 contact hours of online, self-paced study. It is especially suited for military health care providers, licensed nurses and social workers who have little experience in case management and may not yet have obtained certification in case management. Part I focuses on essential roles of case managers while Part II focuses on expanded roles and utilizes case studies as a learning tool.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, the learner will be able to:

Part I

  • Describe the essential functions, various roles and practice settings of case management.
  • Review legislation which has impacted case management.
  • Identify the standards of practice for case management.
  • Describe the processes of case management assessment, consultation and referral.
  • Describe resource and utilization management issues in the current healthcare delivery system.
  • Discuss key concepts regarding the case managers' relationship with the client/consumer.
  • Identify issues pertinent to care recording and documentation.
  • Discuss the process for evaluating client/consumer outcomes.
  • Describe pertinent legal and ethical issues.
  • Review professional case management resources and certification requirements.

Part II

  • Develop skills to effectively manage case management administration.
  • Discuss strategies to manage difficult case management challenges.
  • Describe future industry trends in case management.
  • Analyze complex case studies of special populations.

Cost

The fee for the entire course is $650.00 per participant. Upon completion of the course, participants will be awarded a continuing education certificate for (83) contact hours through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, or 83 hours approved through the Commission of Case Manager Certification.The University of Oklahoma is an approved provider of continuing education by the Colorado Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. The University of Oklahoma has been approved to provide continuing nursing education for three years July 8, 2010 through June 30, 2013. Provider #UOC-0613.
