Prescriptive Authority Preceptorship for CNS
The University of Oklahoma, College of Nursing is offering a preceptorship program to prepare qualified Clinical Nurse Specialists for Prescriptive Authority in Oklahoma. The preceptorship involves 320 contact hours of appropriate practice under the supervision of a qualified preceptor and nurse faculty. Enrollment must be for 20 hours per week over a 16 week period or for 10 hours per week over a 32 week period. Students must meet the admission criteria, secure the services of a qualified preceptor, and, under the direction of a College of Nursing faculty, satisfactorily complete preceptorship requirements. The Prescriptive Authority preceptorship is a continuing education offering. Successful students will receive a certificate of completion. No academic credit for the program will be awarded.
Description
All students will be required to meet with faculty for an orientation to the course. Faculty will conduct visits to the preceptor site as well as seminars and consultation via the Internet. Cost of enrollment in the preceptorship program is $1,275 and may be paid in three (3) installments.
Admission Criteria
- Completion of a master's degree from an accredited college or school of nursing with preparation as a clinical nurse specialist or completion of a Post Master’s Clinical Nurse Specialist Certificate program or current enrollment in the last semester of a clinical nurse specialist graduate program or Post Master’s CNS program. Please provide a copy of graduate college transcript.
- Current licensure as a registered nurse in Oklahoma and current recognition by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or currently enrolled in the last semester of the CNS graduate program or Post Masters CNS Certificate Program. If a CNS, present documentation of national certification in the clinical specialty for which prescriptive authority is sought (i.e., Acute Care, Psychiatric Nursing).
- Completion of NURS 5013 Pharmacology for Advanced Practice Nurses, or PHSC 5010 Clinical Pharmacotherapeutics at OUHSC with a passing grade of C or better or in the process of completing this type of course with a passing grade. If an Advanced Practice Pharmacology course was not part of the graduate curriculum when the CNS student received a Graduate Degree then student must complete a 3 credit hour graduate level pharmacology course or 45 contact hour Advanced Practice Clinical Pharmacotherapeutics Course which is acceptable to OUCN. The Clinical Pharmacotherapeutics course must be completed within 3 years of application for Prescriptive Authority with the OK Board of Nursing.
- Agreement of a qualified preceptor to oversee the preceptorship. A qualified preceptor is a physician or advanced practice nurse with prescriptive authority who is practicing in the appropriate clinical specialty. A Preceptor Data Record and the preceptor's Curriculum Vitae (CV) must accompany the Prescriptive Authority Preceptorship program registration form. Preceptors will subsequently be required to sign a letter of agreement to confirm their
willingness to serve as a Preceptor. Each student will be assigned an instructor in addition to their preceptor.
- The Board of Nursing requires completion of an additional 2 Academic Credits or 30 Contact Hours in Pharmacotherapeutic Management applicable to the scope of practice and specialty area as a pre-requisite or co-requisite to this course and preceptor experience.
