Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Case Manager Do?

The case manager serves as advocate and liaison between yourself and health care providers. It can be overwhelming to navigate today's health care system. You may not know all the questions to ask the physician or you may not be familiar with the vast array of services available to meet your needs. Medical language is often unfamiliar and physicians cannot spend enough time with you to help you understand all the complexities of your illness. The case manager bridges that gap to assure that you have all the information you need to make well-informed health care decisions, and provides linkages to other resources and services to assure you or your family member has all needs attended to. The case manager helps you understand and cope with the medical, insurance, and emotional issues confronting you. A comprehensive assessment is performed and recommendations to enhance your health care and living situation provided. A clear plan for coordinating your health care and maintaining or improving your health is provided.

What are the qualifications of OUCN Case Managers?

When you and your family make a decision to seek assistance with health care coordination and management, you want to be assured that the case manager has the knowledge and expertise of today’s health care system.  The OU College of Nursing Case Management program has been providing case management services since 1995. Our case managers are nurses and social service professionals who provide an integrated and collaborative approach to case management.  All are seasoned case managers with an average of 18 years professional experience; eight years specializing in case management.

What can I expect from the Case Manager?

First, the case manager will thoroughly assess health, use of medication, and environmental and financial resources.  Next you will be given recommendations to enhance your individual health care and residential options.  Depending upon the level of involvement needed and desired, the Case Manager can assist with plan realization and oversight of services as needed.

Will using case management create more health care expense?

Typically a Case Manager will save you money by preventing repetitive, unnecessary services and by making available the necessary resources to enhance your or your family member’s care and environment.
