International Program

The goal of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center Affiliate is to initiate a global perspective within the College of Nursing that meets the four Terms of Reference (ToR) outlined by our sponsor, the University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Nursing. Those four ToR involve capacity building among nurses in Pan American Health Organization countries (and others) such as building leadership capacity, initiating and disseminating research knowledge and initiating child survival programs. As a Collaborating Center we are an arm of the World Health Organization and are to assist WHO in carrying out their mission.
Projects to date have included service learning travel/study programs for faculty and students in Guyana, Guatemala and Bolivia. We have hosted International Visiting Scholars from Russia, Thailand and Taiwan who have had a faculty mentor in residence for from two weeks to six months. Click here to learn more about the Visiting Scholar Program.
We have faculty who are involved in Japan, Serbia, Russia, Israel and St. Kitts. We currently have two graduate students completing the on-line education pathway masters program from Nigeria and Germany. We have a faculty member from Kenya, and International students from Mexico, Pakistan, Malaysia and other places. We have staff from India, Malaysia and China. We are an active partner with the Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN). I believe we are well represented throughout the globe.
Partnerships are in the works with a University in Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.
The College of Public Health has been a willing partner and they too are eager to forge ahead with us.
I would love input to learn how we can achieve a greater global presence for the College of Nursing faculty and students. Thanks.
