The role of the clinical preceptor is a vital component of advanced practice education. We are sincerely grateful for your willingness to share your clinical knowledge and professional time with our graduate students.

The information on this site was developed to assist both new and experienced clinical preceptors to mentor advanced practice students. Please review the documents on this site. Each student you precept should also provide you a copy of the individual course syllabus. In addition, we ask that you complete the Preceptor Credentials form and the Clinical Preceptor Assessment of Student Performance form.

Preceptor Roles and Responsibilities

The role of the preceptor is an integral part of advanced practice education. All students are required to complete a prescribed number of clinical hours in order to meet certification requirements. Through collaborative relationships between the OU College of Nursing (OU CON) and clinical agencies, our students receive the necessary training to become competent advanced practice nurses. We are grateful for your help in meeting the educational needs of our students.

The OU CON Advanced Practice Graduate Program defines a preceptor as a qualified advanced practice nurse or physician who works at a clinical facility whose role is consistent with the learning outcomes of the FNP primary care or Adult-Gerontology CNS. Specific preceptor qualifications are defined in the Rules and Regulations of the  Oklahoma State Board of Nursing. According to the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, a qualified preceptor is an advanced practice registered nurse with an unrestricted license who meets the requirements form prescriptive authority or a licensed medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine with unrestricted prescriptive authority. Preceptor Qualifications/Requirements

All preceptors for OU CON advanced practice programs will:

  • Hold an unencumbered advanced practice nursing license, doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine in the State of Oklahoma.
  • Have at least one year of clinical experience.
  • Provide documentation of licensure and/or certification to OU CON.
  • Provide a curriculum vitae or resume to OU CON.
  • Provide contact information for practice site and valid email address for submission of evaluation.
  • Review the preceptor orientation packet as required by the College of Nursing and accrediting body.
  • Sign the Preceptor Acknowledgement receipt and return to designated program coordinator.
  • Complete the Preceptor Student Clinical Evaluation at the end of the educational experience.

The primary role of the preceptor is to facilitate learning by assisting the student to meet personal and course objectives. This requires preceptors to be able to provide student feedback regarding questions and to correct errors when they occur. The preceptor is a role model for the student, demonstrating professional roles and practice responsibilities. In addition, the preceptor serves as an evaluator by providing valuable learner feedback, support and guidance.

Responsibilities

Establish or verify clinical agreement. Review the clinical course objectives provided by the student. Ensure that the institutional clinical contract is current. Do not attend any clinical experiences without verifying a clinical agreement is existing and active.
Provide preceptor an orientation packet. Address individual learner objectives with student at beginning of each clinical day. Review learner outcomes in the syllabus and the clinical evaluation tool.
Review learner outcomes of the student with the preceptor. Facilitate a learning environment that promotes critical thinking on the part of the student. Negotiate a clinical schedule that facilitates the needs of all participants.
Make clinical site visits as scheduled. Provide direct supervision of advanced practice students during the educational experience.  Arrive prepared for clinical with necessary equipment and resources.
Facilitate communication between the agency and the OU College of Nursing.  Be present during all student clinical experiences or provide an appropriate credentialed substitute during absences.  Be punctual, respectful and professional at all times.
Evaluate student written clinical assignments. Communicate with clinical faculty regarding student progress. Document all clinical hours using Typhon software.
Ensure that students meet standards for immunizations, CPR, liability insurance, background, drug testing, HIPAA training and nursing licensure at the beginning of each semester. Validate patient exam findings and pertinent data reported by the student and review all student documentation in the medical record. Arrange for a site visit with clinical faculty.
Ensure that student clinical experience aligns with course learner objectives. Complete and submit student evaluations. Complete and submit preceptor evaluation tool and site evaluation tool at the end of the clinical experience.

Preceptor Compensation

The OU College of Nursing is grateful for your participation as a clinical preceptor. We are unable to provide any monetary honorarium for your service. However, for your contribution of time as an OU CON preceptor, the college provides free library access and free attendance to the annual Advanced Practice skills conference and any other CE offering during the semester in which you serve as a preceptor.
