Diabetes Today: An Update for Health Care Professionals

Are you concerned that your diabetes knowledge is a little out-of-date? Diabetes mellitus is a complicated disease with constantly changing treatments and strategies. New standards of care have emerged that require clinicians to understand the disease, its implications, and its therapies. Diabetes Today can help you lay the groundwork needed for the practice of excellent diabetes care of your patients.

Purpose

This course, developed by the ediba Diabetes Center of Excellence, provides the most current information about the management of diabetes and hyperglycemia care to health care professionals. This course is primarily aimed at nurses but it is also appropriate for dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, physical therapists, physician assistants, physicians and others who care for clients with diabetes or stress-related hyperglycemia. A focus on inpatient concepts and management reflects the commitment of the ediba Diabetes Center of Excellence to improving outcomes for hospitalized patients with diabetes or hyperglycemia. Each section of this course builds on concepts from previous sections, leading the participant through a self-paced comprehensive knowledge base and thorough understanding of concepts.

Course Content and Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, the learner will be able to meet the following objectives for each module:

Disease Process

• Describe the scope and impact of diabetes mellitus.
• Discuss the pathophysiology of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
• Discuss the type of diabetes, treatment goals, and management strategies for each.

Medication Update

• Discuss various oral agents and significant teaching aspects.
• Differentiate between various insulin preparations, regimens and appropriate teaching aspects.
• Discuss basal/bolus and IV insulin infusion therapy in the hospitalized patient 

Nutrition

• List health goals, current recommendations and various strategies for medical nutrition therapy aimed at prevention and management of diabetes.
• Demonstrate calculation of nutritional insulin dosages using insulin to carbohydrate ratios.
• Discuss nutritional challenges in the hospitalized patient and list strategies for improving outcomes.
• Inpatient Management of Diabetes and Hyperglycemia
• Describe specific issues and treatment goals for the hospitalized patient with diabetes mellitus.
• Identify measures to maintain glycemic control for the hospitalized patient.
• Describe the causes, clinical presentation, and treatment guidelines for DKA and HHS.
• Identify specific guidelines for management of patients with intercurrent illness.

Hypoglycemia

• Describe the causes, clinical presentation, treatment guidelines and preventive measures for hypoglycemia.

Long-Term Complications

• Discuss the pathology, assessment and interventions of the major long-term diabetes complications.
• Identify prevention and screening strategies for the major long-term complications.

Management Strategies

• Explain the role of glucose monitoring in the management of diabetes mellitus.
• Compare and contrast the use of various strategies for glycemia management.
• Apply concepts of glycemia management in case studies.

CE Credit for Nurses / Dieticians/ Other Health Care Professionals

Nurses: 7.0 Nursing Continuing Education Contact Hours

This continuing education certificate course is structured for 7 nursing continuing education contact hours of self-paced study. Upon completion of the course, participants will be awarded a continuing education certificate through the University of Oklahoma for 7 hours of continuing nursing education. The University of Oklahoma College of Nursing is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Colorado Nurse's Association, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Dieticians:7.0 CPEU's Credentialing Agency: Oklahoma representative for the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR). Registered Dietitians (RD) and Dietetic Technicians, Registered (DTR) will receive 7.0 Continuing Professional Education Unites (CPEUs) for completion of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program or materials.

Other Health Professionals- Certificate of completion for 7.0 contact hours.
