OU College of Nursing Students Partner with Oakdale Builders' Society to Help Infant Crisis Services

Posted: March 12, 2012

What began as a classroom assignment became an impressive community project as the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing and Oakdale Builders Club hosted a special baby shower benefitting Oklahoma City's Infant Crisis Services (ICS) on Monday, March 5. Held at Oakdale Public Schools, the students and their community partner presented ICS with over $1,500 worth of bedding, books, clothing, diapers, formula, toiletry items, toys and other much needed items.

The project began as Kathalene Carden, Meredith Behne, Greg Lewis and Julie Null visited Infant Crisis Services as part of their Community Clinical group. Realizing that small things like clothing and diapers can make a huge impact in the lives of these children and their families, the classmates organized a baby shower to gather donations for the nonprofit. Partnering with the Oakdale Builder's Club, a leadership class at Oakdale Public Schools, the group collected donations from their fellow students and local businesses.

In addition, their efforts received the attention of Oklahoma City NBC affiliate KFOR, which featured them on their March 2 and March 5 news broadcasts and raised awareness of ICS and their mission. A non-profit organization, ICS provides emergency assistance to children who would otherwise go without the basic necessities. To learn more about ICS, visit http://www.infantcrisis.org.
