Due to federal regulations from the Department of Education, the College of Nursing currently accepts applications for its online master’s and doctoral degree programs from residents of the states participating in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA). A list of participating states can be found at: Applicants are encouraged to check with their local State Boards of Nursing regarding any specific professional licensure requirements prior to applying or enrolling.

CNS & NP Program Essay Instructions

The CNS and NP programs require an essay to be attached to the application. Please review the below prompts to begin working on this essay. Administration/Management and Education applicants do not submit an essay.

CNS Essay Prompts:

Clinical Experiences:

  • Please describe your most important clinical experiences and accomplishments over the past three years. If you have been a nurse for less than three years, you may include student clinical experiences and accomplishments.
  • Provide a brief overview of your previous nursing experience and accomplishments prior to three years ago. 

Clinical Nurse Specialist Intentions:

  • Please describe the perception of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role and how you envision implementing the role within your chosen specialty, preferred population, and preferred setting.
  • What attracted you to the Clinical Nurse Specialist role?
  • What other roles that require advanced education did you consider before making your decision to apply for the CNS track?
  • What characteristics of the CNS role factored into your decision to choose it over the other option?
  • Explain how you decided on "Adult Gero" as a specialty? (Be specific)


NP Essay Prompts:

  • Discuss your nursing experience and how it has led to the pursuit of the NP role.
  • Describe your perception of the Nurse Practitioner role and the specialty you have selected. What are your sources for knowing about the NP role?
  • Describe your academic goals.
  • Describe your career goals. Include a description of the population of patients, type of setting and community for whom you plan to provide care upon completion of your NP education and provide your rationale.  


General Recommendations for Applicants


  • Following the initial application process, applicants may need to update their grades or transcripts.
  • Updated grades or new planned/in-progress coursework should be updated in the NursingCAS admission application during the application process.
  • Updated transcripts may be sent to the NursingCAS Transcript Department during the application process.

  • A hold will appear in the supplemental application status for a “final” transcript, if one is needed.
  • This hold does not affect admission processing.

  • Check e-mail accounts routinely for any communication from the College or application service. Respond promptly to any requests.
  • Complete as many prerequisites as possible prior to application.
  • Prioritize prerequisite, laboratory sciences. Content preparation is very important.
  • Complete the majority of prerequisites at the university level when possible.
  • Confirm all transcripts are received and posted by checking the application status online. Missing transcripts are noted in many denied applications.
  • Grades for in progress courses will likely not be returned prior to admission decisions being made. All GPAs must be at the minimum required both at time of application and through enrollment in the program. Low GPAs are a primary cause of most denied applications.

Incomplete Applications

It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm all admission requirements are met and all coursework (including planned prerequisite courses) is posted for proper evaluation of the application. Applicants may not be contacted by the College if their application is deficient or incomplete. Again, this is the applicant’s responsibility.

Admission Timeline

  • Complete applications will be processed only after the application deadline has passed.
  • The application review process will take approximately 2-4 months to complete.
  • Applicants will be notified by e-mail regarding their admission status.
  • Certain programs may require an enrollment deposit if admission is offered.

In-State/Out-of-State Tuition Policy

Residency is determined by the HSC Office of Admission and Records. Please review their website for further information. Questions regarding the policy can be directed to their office at 

TOEFL Requirements

A TOEFL examination will be required if the applicant was born outside the United States of America. The minimum score required is 550 (paper based), 59 (revised paper-based) and 79 (internet based). The TOEFL examination can be no more than 2 years old and must be completed and filed at time of application with the Office of Admissions & Records. Waivers are not generally permitted through the College of Nursing, but may be considered for applicants who meet one of the following criteria:

  • US Citizens born abroad (such as military dependents)
  • Applicants who completed high school in the United States
  • Applicants who completed at least 24 hours of higher education (college or university) coursework in the United States
  • Applicants who have completed an Associate’s degree (Associate of Arts - AA, Associate of Sciences - AS, or Associate of Applied Sciences - AAS) at an Oklahoma school
  • Applicants who have completed a Bachelor’s degree at a United States accredited university or college
  • Applicants who have completed a Master’s degree at a United States accredited university or college

Admission may be denied if TOEFL scores are not reported or are below the minimum required at time of application. International Applicant Instructions


If the applicant has completed coursework outside of the United States, the applicant must obtain an evaluation of the international coursework through World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). The WES  or ECE evaluation will not determine the applicant's eligibility for or admission to the nursing program. The WES or ECE evaluation will only determine the U.S. equivalency of the international coursework.   • Employment: Students seeking licensure in the state of Oklahoma as a Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Nurse must meet the regulatory requirements of the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. In November 2007, the State of Oklahoma passed legislation which potentially limits employment opportunities to international students. Applicants are encouraged to review these guidelines prior to admission to the nursing program. Please visit the Oklahoma Board of Nursing website at:
  • Online Curriculum: Current Oklahoma regulations preclude international students from participating in academic programs that are conducted entirely via the Internet. Applicants are advised to review the curriculum for their anticipated program.
