Alumni Profile

Sara Kernell

When Sara Kernell graduated from OU’s BSN program at the Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing in 2002, she knew she wanted to serve her community in the health field. A few years later, Sara found herself working with the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic – an urban clinic serving Native Americans of any tribe. The clinic provides primary care for patients from across the region. Today, Sara serves as Public Health Director for the clinic.

In this role, Sara is in touch with the public health needs of the populations she serves: working on projects involving community outreach, prevention, education, and more --- all in concert with a variety of community partners. This innovative approach also includes case management with a goal of providing preventative care to a user population of more than 17,000. In 2015, Sara was a recipient of the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year award. She has also been a recipient of a prestigious scholarship from the Indian Health Service. She credits the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing with helping her launch a rewarding career.
