Undergraduate Preceptorship

The role of the clinical preceptor is a vital component of baccalaureate education. We are sincerely grateful for your willingness to share your clinical knowledge and professional time with our baccalaureate students. We thank you for your support of The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing by being a clinical preceptor.

PRECEPTOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All students are required to complete a prescribed number of clinical hours in order to meet graduation requirements. Through collaborative relationships between the OU College of Nursing (OU CON) and clinical agencies, our students receive the necessary training to become competent baccalaureate nurses. We are grateful for your help in meeting the educational needs of our students.

The OU CON BSN Program defines a preceptor as a qualified baccalaureate or higher prepared nurse who works at a clinical facility whose role is consistent with the baccalaureate prepared registered nurse. Specific preceptor qualifications are defined in the Rules and Regulations of the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing. According to the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, a qualified preceptor is a baccalaureate (BSN) prepared registered nurse with an unrestricted license with at least one year of experience as a BSN prepared nurse.

PRECEPTOR QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

All preceptors for OU CON baccalaureate programs will:
  • Hold an unencumbered nursing license, as a registered nurse in the State of Oklahoma.
  • Have a BSN or higher nursing degree.
  • Have at least one year of clinical experience.
  • Provide documentation of licensure and/or certification to OU CON.
  • Review the preceptor orientation packet as required by the College of Nursing and accrediting body.
  • Complete the preceptor form.
  • Complete the Preceptor Student Clinical Evaluation at the end of the educational experience.
The primary role of the preceptor is to facilitate learning by assisting the student to meet personal and course objectives. This requires preceptors to be able to provide student feedback regarding clinical performance and to correct errors when they occur. The preceptor is a role model for the student, demonstrating professional roles and practice responsibilities. In addition, the preceptor provides valuable learner feedback, support, and guidance. Preceptor feedback is an important part of the learner’s growth and development as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse.
