OUCN Team Attends Duke University TIP-NEP Program

Posted: August 07, 2009

A team from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing attended the Technology Integration Program for Nursing Education and Practice (TIP-NEP) conference at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, August 2-5, 2009. The program is funded by a HRSA grant to Duke University in collaboration with Western Carolina University. Gary Loving, Jani Hill, and Susan Ellerbee submitted an abstract to present Using an Open-Source Clinical Information System for Informatics Education in Nursing. Approximately 70 teams from across the United States submitted applications for the conference and 12 were selected to attend the conference with expenses paid.

Each team presented their technology innovation in nursing education. Several national speakers presented innovations ranging from development and use of health information exchanges to using virtual worlds for nursing education. Because only 36 nurse educators attended the conference there were numerous opportunities for networking. For example, the OUCN team was able to make valuable contacts with a team from Johns Hopkins University who are using another clinical information system for purposes very similar to ours.

For their participation in the conference each team's school also receives a $3,000 stipend to use for further integration of technology into their nursing education programs. Another team from OUCN, Gary Loving, Susan Smith, and Jamie Morris, participated in the 2007 TIP-NEP conference. The $3,000 stipend from the 2007 conference was used as seed money for the annual Informatics and e-learning Conference for Nurse Educators sponsored jointly by OUCN and the Institute for Oklahoma Nursing Education (IONE).

OUCN faculty who wish to gather more information about the educational innovations experienced at the 2009 TIP-NEP may contact one of the team members. Duke's TIP-NEP program will hold their final conference during August, 2010. One can locate more information about the TIP-NEP program at http://tip-nep.org/.
