Dr. Wilhelm is a nurse scientist and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant whose research examines how healthcare provider practices and social determinants of health shape breastfeeding and maternal-infant outcomes. Her work focuses on families experiencing health inequities and addresses critical workforce gaps in lactation care. She investigates mechanisms within perinatal care delivery that influence health trajectories across the lifespan, translating findings into evidence-based interventions and implementation strategies. Dr. Wilhelm collaborates across disciplines with colleagues in nursing, medicine, public health, and basic science to translate bench science findings into clinical application.

Dr. Wilhelm teaches nursing students at all levels and works with interdisciplinary learners from health, social, and technical fields to build research literacy, clinical reasoning, and collaborative problem-solving skills for complex care systems. Having worked clinically throughout her own education, from LPN through PhD, she designs courses that support working students and career-changers while maintaining academic rigor. She brings clinical experience as a postpartum nurse and lactation consultant to her scholarship and teaching, with specialized training in the Brazelton Newborn Behavioral Observation system, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and trauma-informed care approaches.
