Amy Hutchens is an assistant professor at the Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing. Amy began work at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in the fall of 2010. Amy is the course coordinator for the Human Experience of Acute and Chronic Illness 1, and the lead Instructor for the Human Experience of Acute and Chronic Illness 2 and 3, and Pharmacology in Nursing on the Oklahoma City campus. Amy has been recognized for knowledge in nursing at the local and state level through obtaining her Certified Nurse Educator certificate via the National league for Nursing. The students in her classes consistently recognize her knowledge in nursing through their feedback on student evaluations. Amy has been recognized for her knowledge in nursing education at the national level by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Dr. Hutchens contributed test items for the National Counsel Licensure Exam (N-CLEX-RN). Amy was recognized by the Fran and Earl Zeigler College of nursing for her excellence in academic teaching for the calendar year 2018-2019 and by the March of Dimes in 2015. In the fall of 2017, Amy completed her PhD at Arizona State University. ASU awarded her with multiple scholarships including the Understanding Neighborhood Determinants of Obesity fellowship, the Grace Fuite Fellowship, the Linda Kay Jones Memorial scholarship, and the T-32 Transdisciplinary Training in Health Disparities Science predoctoral fellowship. Amy’s research focuses parents and their roles in children’s physical activity. While at Arizona State, Amy published 2 peer reviewed manuscripts. One is titled “Parental Perceptions of Safety and Gender Influences on Children’s Physical Activity in Mexico: A Cross Sectional Study. This was published in Salud Publica de Mexico. Dr. Hutchens presented that study at the Society of Behavioral Medicine 2015 annual conference, and the abstract was published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine. The paper was presented at The Southwestern Interdisciplinary Research Conference in April of 2016. Amy wrote an integrative review titled Parenting Practices and Children’s Physical Activity. It was presented at the Sigma Theta Tau Bi-ennial convention in November of 2015. The review was published in The Journal of School Nursing in 2018. The review was presented in September of 2016 as a podium presentation at Council for The Advancement of Nursing Science in Washington DC. From 2017-2018 Amy worked as the director of education for the Oklahoma Nurses Association. Dr. Hutchens developed educational initiatives put forth by the ONA. As an Oklahoma Nurses Association delegate representing region 1, Amy supported the resolutions to define nurses as coordinators of care, and evaluated ONA bylaws. Dr. Hutchens also supported and advocated for full practice authority for APRNs through the Oklahoma Legislature. Amy Hutchens was elected to serve ad membership development director for the Oklahoma Nurses Association from 2020-2021.
