WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PHD (DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY) AND A DNP (DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE)?
The PhD curriculum and objectives focused on developing and enhancing the science and theory of nursing through research. Research options are diverse and can include physiological, behavioral, clinical, and community-oriented studies. As an academic degree, PhD graduates must meet all the requirements of the Graduate College. The DNP is a professional degree, granted by the College of Nursing, and is designed to prepare nurses at the highest level of nursing practice who will lead in applying and translating research into practice.
IS AN OKLAHOMA NURSING LICENSE REQUIRED?
An Oklahoma nursing license is required for the students in the FNP and CNS programs because all clinical hours must be completed in Oklahoma. The Executive Leadership students must hold a license in the state in which they will be completing their required hours since this program is 100% online.
Full-Time students can complete course work in three years. Part-Time students can complete course work in four-five years.
HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO TRAVEL TO CAMPUS?
On-campus requirements vary by specific pathway. Executive Leadership is 100% online. Family Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist students on-campus time varies by course.
WHAT TYPES OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE ARE AVAILABLE?
HOW ARE THE CLINICAL ROTATIONS FOR THE PROGRAM ARRANGED?
The University maintains contracts with a variety of agencies that support student clinical opportunities. Placements are individualized and based on competencies, location of residence and interest. Students at The University of Oklahoma College of Nursing are not allowed to pay a preceptor for their clinical experiences. College faculty will help guide students in obtaining clinical opportunities.
ONCE I ENROLL IN THE PROGRAM, IF DESIRED, AM I ALLOWED TO WITHDRAW FROM THE DNP PORTION?
The BSN to DNP program is actively looking for students committed to completing the entire DNP curriculum. As such, there is not a process that would allow a student to exit the program and receive an MSN degree when the NP or CNS clinical courses are completed. Students who experience issues, which are impeding their success, must consult their academic adviser to discuss options.
CAN A STUDENT WORK AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM SIMULTANEOUSLY OR IS IT RECOMMENDED TO NOT WORK?
It is highly recommended that students who choose to work full-time select the part-time enrollment option. The BSN to DNP program is rigorous and challenging; even with limited on-campus hours, there are commitment expectations that include a thorough review of materials, application of learning, online assignments, clinical hours, and writing.
