General Education Waivers: 

• Items 1-5 are waived for those with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science* degree from a regionally accredited college in Oklahoma. 

• Items 1-6 are waived for those with a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. 

• Item 4 may be met by two semesters (6-10 credit hours) of the same language in college or two years of the same language in high school. A high school transcript will be required if waived using high school coursework. 

^Applicants are advised to complete a general-education approved statistics course. Approved courses can be found at: http://www.ou.edu/content/gened/courses.html. Statistics courses taken at other colleges and universities should have a general education notation on the OU Transfer Equivalencies Database at: https://www.ou.edu/content/admissions/transfer_equivalencies.html. 

*Please note that general education requirements will NOT be waived for Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Applied Art degrees.

GENERAL EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 

WESTERN CIVILIZATION 

A course in American or Western-European studies other than US History. Examples include Social Problems, Ethics, History of Western Civilization, Philosophy, or many Humanities courses. The course must be a minimum three semester credit hours and be passed with a grade of C or better. 
Approved Western Civ courses at OU Norman campus 

WORLD CULTURE 

A course in non-American/ non-Western-European studies. Examples include History of Native Americans, Cultural Anthropology, or World Religions. Applicants are encouraged to take this course at a University instead of a community college and to take it as a 3000- 4000 level course to also meet the upper division requirement without having to take an additional course. Applicants may “double-dip” and apply credit toward the “Culture” requirement. The course must be a minimum three semester credit hours and be passed with a grade of C or better.

UNDERSTANDING ART FORMS 

A course in the study of art; not a course in the practice of art. Examples include Music Appreciation, Art History, Intro to Literature, or Intro to Theater. The course must be a minimum three semester credit hours and be passed with a grade of C or better. 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE 

All applicants must document completion of either 2-years of the same foreign language in high school (on a high school transcript), or 2-semesters of the same foreign language in college (for a total of 6-10 semester credit hours). Credit cannot be mixed between the high school and college level. 

3000-4000 LEVEL GENERAL EDUCATION 

All students must transfer one upper division General Education course taken outside of their major to document their ability to handle the rigors of upper division coursework prior to starting the nursing program. This course needs to be completed through a four-year university, not a community college or other two-year institution. Regardless of content equivalency, the course completed must be at the junior/senior level. Lower division courses from two-year institutions will not transfer to meet this specific upper division requirement. Students are advised to take one of the previously listed general education courses, such as Non-Western Culture, at the 3000-4000 level to double-dip on credit. For example, a junior-level Cultural Anthropology course will meet the World Culture requirement and this upper division requirement. This course must be a minimum three semester credit hours and be passed with a grade of C or better
