Student Learning Outcomes  

Upon successful completion of the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing Baccalaureate Degree Program the graduate will be prepared to: 

1. Provide entry-level safe, competent, ethical care to culturally diverse individuals, families and populations across health care settings and across the lifespan. 

2. Function effectively as a member of the Nursing Profession and as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. 

3. Practice professional nursing based on current evidence. 

4. Assume accountability for evaluation and improvement of nursing practice. 

5. Integrate the safe and confidential use of information technology and health care technology into one’s practice as a professional nurse.

• The science GPA will be calculated from each attempt of General Chemistry, Microbiology, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology.

• Items 1-5 are waived for those with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science* degree from a regionally accredited college in Oklahoma.
• Items 1-6 are waived for those with a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

• Item 4 may be met by two semesters (6-10 credit hours) of the same language in college or two years of the same language in high school. A high school transcript will be required if waived using high school coursework.

^Applicants are advised to complete a general-education approved statistics course. Approved courses can be found here.

Statistics courses taken at other colleges and universities should have a general education notation on the OU Transfer Equivalencies Database. 

*Please note that general education requirements will NOT be waived for Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Applied Art degrees.

Regular Admission Requirements

Completion of 61 credit hours of prerequisite coursework

• 30 credit hours must be completed prior to application.     
• The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) is on a semester credit- hour system. Students transferring coursework from an institution on trimester or quarter-hour systems should contact an advisor to determine how the coursework will transfer. 
• All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.       

Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

• OUHSC considers all coursework regardless of academic forgiveness granted by other institutions. Each attempt of any course taken will be calculated into the CGPA.        

Science grade point average (SGPA) of a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

• At least one of the four laboratory science prerequisites must be completed prior to application. 
• Four laboratory sciences required are: General Chemistry, Microbiology, Human Anatomy and Human Physiology   
• No additional sciences taken will be included in the SGPA.

Early Admission Requirements (University of Oklahoma Norman, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Murray State College) 

The early admission option for current University of Oklahoma Norman, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, and Murray State College students to the Traditional BSN program was created to offer outstanding prospective students the opportunity to secure positions in the BSN program earlier than the normal admission cycle. Positions are limited and applicants not admitted will be considered in the regular application/selection pool. The application deadline for early admission is December 1.

• Apply and be admitted to either The University of Oklahoma Norman, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, or Murray State College.
  Applicant must be in good standing at either The University of Oklahoma Norman, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, or Murray State College
• A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 on a scale of 4.0.
  The College of Nursing does not honor academic forgiveness or reprieve policies. Each attempt at each course from each institution previously attended will be calculated into the Cumulative GPA. Newly admitted students must maintain a 3.25 GPA while completing prerequisite courses.
• A science grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 on a scale of 4.0.
  Each attempt at Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Microbiology, and General (Intro) Chemistry will be calculated. No other science courses will be used to calculate this Science GPA. Newly admitted students must maintain a 3.25 GPA while completing prerequisite courses. The College of Nursing does not honor academic forgiveness or reprieve policies. Each attempt at each of these four courses from each institution previously attended will be calculated into the overall Science GPA.
• Completion of two (2) of the four (4) College of Nursing prerequisite science courses (Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy, or Physiology) with at least one (1) completed at the The University of Oklahoma Norman, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, or Murray State College.
• A grade of "C" or better in all prerequisite courses.
• Credit hour transfer requirements must be met for each prerequisite course.
• The University of Oklahoma is on a Semester credit-hour system. Students completing coursework at an institution on a Quarter credit-hour system are advised that coursework will transfer based on a 0.67 transfer rate. For example: a 3 credit-hour course on the Quarter credit-hours system will transfer as 2.01 Semester credit-hours and will not meet the transfer credit hour requirement for most prerequisite courses. Please contact an academic advisor for further advisement.
• Completion of at least 24 semester hours of nursing prerequisite courses at the University of Oklahoma Norman, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, or Murray State College campus at the time the application for admission is submitted.
• Clarification: All students must transfer a total of 61 non-nursing credit hours, including prerequisite courses, prior to enrollment in nursing courses. Elective hours can be taken, as needed, to complete the total transfer hour requirement. For example, if an applicant only has 59 total hours after completing all prerequisites, the applicant would then need 2 elective credit hours prior to enrolling in nursing courses. All prerequisites must be completed prior to first enrollment in nursing coursework.
• Admission decisions will be announced by February 1st.
• Prior to initial College of Nursing enrollment, each newly admitted student must submit official transcripts to demonstrate completion of all required prerequisite coursework.

Timeline

• Apply to OUHSC College of Nursing by December 1st. Documents that must accompany the application are: (1) official transcripts to document all previous coursework.
• Conditional admission letters are delivered by e-mail in February.
• Confirmations of acceptance and deposits must be received by OUHSC Admissions and Records within 10 days of receipt of the admissions offer.
• Unsuccessful applicants to the Direct Early Admission program will be re-considered (without reapplication) for admission during the regular admission period and notified by March of the Admissions Committee’s decision.

Admission Contingency

A conditional admit to the BSN program by way of the Early Admission Program must satisfy all remaining admission requirements (including maintenance of minimum GPA) during the Fall and Spring terms prior to initial nursing enrollment. Should the conditional admit fail to complete the admission requirements or fail to submit documentation to confirm completion, the early admission is forfeited, and the student may apply through the next regular admission period.
